Jamila Jones, PhD
 Principal

I have a bachelor’s degree in education, a master’s degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) and a doctorate of philosophy in Linguistics.  I have worked in the United States and abroad. I taught English in Morocco, Saudi Arabia, and the United States.  My most recent work was at Prince Mohammad Bin Fahd University in AlKhobar (2006 – 2009) , Saudi Arabia and Ball State University(2009 – 2014) in Indiana. My favorite place in Saudi Arabia was Al-Taif.  I have also worked extensively with Islamic schools.  I was principal of Genesee Academy in Swartz Creek, Michigan twice.  My first term of service was from 1996-1999 and then again from 2003 – 2006.  This is my second time as principal of the Greater Lansing Islamic School also.  I have knowledge of the Arabic language.  I attended the Arabic Institute of the Girls College in Riyadh in 1990 and California University of Pennsylvania, which is located  in California, Pennsylvania near Pittsburgh, PA in the United States and  I received a certificate of completion from CAU. I study and then take a break and study again. Students are fortunate that they are able to study and learn in one place and at one time what others have to travel the world to learn. Al-hamdulillah for the Islamic school.

  I was instrumental in obtaining GLIS’ accreditation and I pray that GLIS is able to keep it.

Masarat Sayeed Early Pre-Kindergarten

My name is Masarat Sayeed. I am a Montessori Teacher and I teach Early Pre-K at Greater Lansing Islamic School. I believe that children are
natural learners. When given an opportunity and freedom to choose from
a well prepared environment, children can teach themselves. My goal in Early Pre-K is to create an environment that drives children to learning where they can learn while having fun, Insha’Allah.

I am excited to be starting my 10th year at Greater Lansing Islamic School. This will be my 16th year teaching Pre-K! I am married with 3 children of my own. My son is entering middle school, my younger daughter is embarking on her first year of college, and my oldest daughter will be graduating from college this year. For enjoyment, I love hiking, baking and crafting! Professionally, I am currently taking classes to further my education and I am enjoying every minute of it!

Christine Ann Dennings Kindergarten

Hi my name is Christine Dennings and I am delighted to be the Kindergarten teacher at Greater Lansing Islamic School.  I received my bachelor’s degree from Western Michigan University and am certified to teach K-8th grades.  This is my first year at GLIS and I look forward to working with the kindergartners.

My name is Jamie Torrey and this is my thirteenth year teaching at GLIS. I teach the core subjects in 2nd grade. I also teach sixth and seventh grade math. I have been married for six years to my husband, Andrew.  We have a 2 year old son, Jackson, who keeps us very busy.  We are expecting our 2nd son at the end of February.  I went to college at Saginaw Valley State University and finished my master’s degree at Mary Grove College. I have one brother named Justin and a sister named Ashley. My sister lives in Los Angeles, California and my brother lives in Bay City, Mi.   In my free time I enjoy spending time with my son, traveling, and shopping.
Samantha Davis
3rd Grade Homeroom Teacher

My name is Samantha Davis and I teach 3rd grade core subjects as well as 5th and 8th grade mathematics. This is my 8th year at GLIS. I received my Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education from Central Michigan University. I majored in Mathematics and received minors in Reading and Child Development. I completed my student teaching at Lewton Elementary School in Lansing in both third grade and kindergarten classrooms. I enjoy reading in my spare time. I enjoy spending time with my husband; our 2.5 year-old daughter, Lena; and our puppy, Camden, when not at school.


Karen Elsadek 4th Grade Homeroom Teacher

My name is Karen Elsadek and this is my fifteenth year at Greater Lansing Islamic School.  I've taught a variety of classes here, from Kindergarten to 8th grade, as well as serving as principal for 8 years. Before teaching at GLIS, I taught for nearly 20 years in Vermont in a one room school.  I taught K - 8 all subjects.  I received my bachelor's degree in education from the University of Vermont and my master's in educational administration from MSU.  I love teaching and working with children and especially enjoy teaching mathematics.  I have one son, Ibrahim, who will be in his second year of East Lansing High School this year.  In my free time, I enjoy reading and crocheting.  This year I will be teaching 7th grade language arts, 5th grade social studies and 4th grade language arts, math, social studies and art.  Insha Allah it will be a fun and rewarding year!

  My name is Sawsan Mahmoud. This is my sixth year teaching in GLIS; I teach Arabic language for EPK, 4th- 8th graders. I have been in this community for 27 years; I have been married for 22 years and have three girls. I graduated from Ross Medical Education Center as a Medical Assistant, I worked at Meridian Women’s Health clinic for four years. My love and bonding to the community and its kids made me end up working at GLIS. Alhamdullah, I’m happy and thankful to work here and be part of GLIS family and have the opportunity to teach my favorite language; Arabic, the language of Quran, to our wonderful students. I started taking educational classes at Lansing Community College last year to improve my teaching skills and have more knowledge in education.
Nicole Mitchell 6th Grade Homeroom Teacher

My name is Nicole Mitchell. This is my sixth year teaching at G.L.I.S.  In all, I have 12 years of teaching experience. I received my teaching degree from Michigan State University and began my teaching career with the Maryland Public School Systems. I have two children who attend the East Lansing Public Schools. My son is in 4th grade and my daughter is in 8th grade. In my spare time, I enjoy taking nice, long walks and taking group fitness classes at the gym. My family and I love to take road trips, especially to New York City and North Carolina.

 Trained as a medical doctor, Raghda Khatib is very knowledgeable in Islam and Arabic, including a certificate of Tajweed of Qur'an. Prior to joining the Islamic School, Raghda has several years of experience of teaching in Sunday school. Raghda will teach Islamic studies for  5th, 6th, 7th and 8th classes and Arabic for higher level. She will also teach Quran for upper grade.

 My name is Tariq Sumbal. This will be the third year I have taught at the school. I teach science to grades 4,5,6 and 7.I also teach social studies to grades 6,7and 8.
I have several years of working with students of all ages in various districts around the Mid Michigan area. I volunteer as an assistant football coach for Waverly High School and work at Best Buy. In my free time I like to lift weights and travel. I have one child,a daughter by the name of Fatima. I received my undergraduate degree in zoology from Michigan State University and Masters in Public Administration from Western Michigan University.

Feryal Al-Qaidi
Teacher - Pre K Islamic Studies and Quran

My name is Feryal Al-Qadi. I grew up in Kuwait, and have been teaching Arabic and Quran in GLIS for the past 12 years.  I have my degree in Arabic and Islamic Studies from the Islamic American University.I also teach in the Dar Al-Quran program. In my free time I enjoy reading Quran and visiting my family.

Ghasak Al-ObaidiPre-Kindergarten Teacher Aide and 8th grade Science teacher

I was born in Lincoln, Nebraska 1976, raised in Baghdad, Iraq. I received my B.Sc. in biology in 1998 and a M.Sc. in Phytoplankton Ecology in 2007 from the University of Baghdad.

In 2004, I joined Nature Iraq, an NGO, and spent couple years as a researcher and Phytoplankton team leader. In 2005, I got involved in many restoration and monitoring projects in Iraq such as the Canada-Iraq Marshlands Initiative. In 2009, I joined the American University of Iraq-Sulaimani as a researcher. It was so exciting to be part of an ecological team working on the restoration on the Iraqi Marshes. During 2011 – 2013, I gained valuable experience and knowledge as a visiting researcher in the Department of Biology, Miami University, Oxford Campus. Since fall 2014, I started as a part time instructor in Miami University, Hamilton and Oxford Campus to teach an Environmental Biology class as well as a Human Physiology class. Me and my family moved from Ohio to Michigan about a year ago. This is my first year at Greater Lansing Islamic School, I will be assisting Sr. Zainab with Pre-K and teaching 8th grade science. I am looking forward for a great year. The best times I have are those spent with my family. I love to travel, as travel has always being a part of my life. My philosophy is to never give up easily and always believe in yourself, find the positives and work around the obstacles to achieve your dreams

Huma Jeddy Office Secretary

My name is Huma Jeddy, I was born and raised in Chennai, India. I received my bachelor’s degree in Nutrition and Science from University of Tamil Nadu, India. I started working as an Office Secretary at GLIS in 2008. This year I have the pleasure of teaching Art for 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade. I am also a co-coach of the GLIS Odyssey of the Mind team. I enjoy being a part of the GLIS family. 

Lul Hassan Administrative Assistant 
My name is Lul Hassan, I was born and raised in  Mogadishu, Somalia. I   have my bachelor's degree in Political Science from the University of Somalia. I have been with the school form when  the school started in 1996,  as a volunteer, parent, part-time aide, full-time secretary. For a few year now I have been serving the school as an Administrative Assistant.

Mirvat had been a staff member of the school when it first opened way back in 1996. She taught Preschool, Arabic, and was a teacher’s aide. Mirvat is a very kind and caring person who we are pleased to have working with our students.

Noha AlKholi Teacher -  Quran Teacher

My name is Noha AlkholiI completed my Bachelor's Degree of Physical Therapy at Cairo University and am currently a Quran teacher at the Islamic School. I am a mother of four daughters that have each attended the Islamic School. I have been teaching Quran for more than 12 years. I specialize in teaching beginners how to read the Quran. I am honored to be a part of the GLIS Team!


Ourida Ouldbouzian
Teacher - Islamic Studies 
 
Ourida (Warda) has now been teaching at GLIS for several years. She will teach Islamic Studies to the Kindergartners, 1st, 2nd, 3rd  and 4th grade.

My name is Sahar Mohamed, I am a Quran teacher at the Greater Lansing Islamic School. I studied Arabic and Islamic Studies in Egypt. I have taught in summer Quran program and Sunday school.  I’m a mother for two young boys who attend GLIS. I’m very grateful to join the GLIS family this year.
